Some General Glimpses of the Rejuvenation of a Generation
Some issues that the project of the Rejuvenation of a Generation emphasizes
Striving to fulfill objectives at the individual, family, and community levels: the objective of realizing ‘what is better and more endurable’: this is upheld as the basis of work, even when we may to sacrifice short-term benefits.
‘wa fi thalika falyatanafasi lmutanafisun’
Developing patience and musabarah; perseverance on the way to fulfilling objectives
Being aware of the gradation, progressive accomplishment of objectives, minor objectives serving to reach long-term goals.
Adopting SMART in dealing with objectives
That goals are (specific, measurable, assignable, realistic and time-related ).
Developing critical thinking, avoiding blind mimicking; developing ability to sort out what is worthy of preservation and what should be discarded
For social change to be realized it is essential that academic, scientific knowledge in psychology and sociology are circulated among cultured persons in the community, so that social change goes beyond being amateurish, based upon subjective thought; to be rather scientific and systematic work, based on sound facts, measurable, verifiable, and accountable.
Adopting a law-based (sunan in the Qur’an) work in social activity
And the pivotal place of the human (a khalifah, as the Qur’an puts it) as in the Verse of the Qur’an: “wasakhkhara ..g..jamee’an minhu”
Full acceptance of science; understanding its real significance; searching for the scientific evidences and supportive indications and proofs; realizing the natural progress of science through reviewing previous findings, pruning present findings, and the law of: what is good and beneficial for humankind will stay, as one learns from the Verse of the Qur’an:
“fa’amma ..g..fil ard;” ( )
That for a scientific fact to be accepted it must realize the test of taskhir, and fulfilling the predicted results, that results accord with causes.
Dealing with situations in a gentle way, as we were taught by the Prophet, peace be upon him: “No situation but is improved upon using gentleness, and no situation where gentleness is absent but is ruined;”
Putting forward such issues as involve some measure of challenge and uncertainty; encouraging constructive debate, being mindful, at the same time, of the importance of attentive listening, and being ready to accept the other’s correct views.
Being alert at the same time to the context where the debate is conducted, and caring for relationships with others – being most careful to preserve a positive relationship. To spoil the situation and to ruin a relationship with the other often counterbalance any immediate gain in proving an argument.
Establishing social justice and the rule of law, over all parties: all must be equal before the judiciary.
Preserving human dignity, an individual’s independence and freedom of choice.
Being alert to the problem of the absence of taking into account the general accountability of, and giving attention to others’ requirements.
Enhancing a sense of the usefulness of our effort in producing its social impact.
The importance of experience and information from others in discovering facts.
Having the ability of self-examination, and being ready to accept constructive criticism addressed by others, to correct one’s conceptions and progress.
Giving support to those who enjoin justice, no matter of what creed or race they might be, as we learn from the Verse of the Qur’an: “walladhina ya’murun bilqisti mina nnas”
Nourishing a feeling of belonging to, collaboration with, and support of those who stand for truth and uphold justice, and those who stand by the wronged party, as the ‘Hilf al-Fudul’ was complimented by the Messenger, peace be upon him.
Such superior principles must be translated into real-life behaviors: they are of little worth unless they are implemented.
Developing the trait of accuracy and truthfulness, in both utterance and deed.
Resolving to achieve success and supremacy, as individuals, institutions, and communities – it is not enough that we have good intentions and sincerity: this does not guarantee the accomplishment of what we wish to accomplish: people are responsible and accountable for the outcome of their deeds.
