Our children live in an environment torn apart in all directions, in a way that it is hard for them to determine their identity and role in the society where they happen to live.
With this in mind, we endeavor in the present Portfolio:
- To enable the youth realize the concept of citizenship, belonging, and identity, by having them respond to the story of a town where various events take place and shed light on the vital concepts, and requiring the student to share in finding solutions for them.
- The student learns through experiential learning diversity and debate within society, respecting the views of those different from us, and the importance of coexistence.
- The youth are acquainted with the concept of duality of rights and duties, the notion of social sharing, through the principle of shura-democracy, in an exciting, interactive, way, that pertains closely to their life, experience, and observation.
- The youth realizes his/her role and impact in connection with the principle of shura-democracy, and how that reflects on the general good.
- The youths are made to realize that before shura-democracy are declared as social requirement, it must settle in the soul as a personal trait and practice.
- The youths are introduced to the notion of justice, and practicing justice in our life; and they get to realize the consequences of the absence of justice; they are alerted to the fact that obedience is only due within the boundaries of what is right and good, with the concomitant duty of the individuals’ resisting injustice in their society.
- The youths are made to observe the significance of applying the above principles, their consequences, and the consequences of their absence, in real-world terms, and at the various levels.
- Our hope is that, by the end of this Course, the youth is more proud of his/her identity and belonging, with a clear mind about his/her role as a responsible citizen, in the light of what we learn from our Prophet, peace be upon him, when he said: “Each one of you is a shepherd, and each shepherd is responsible for his/her herd.”
We are here, and everywhere, keen to have the unfamiliar concepts be clarified and implanted in the mind; and to expose erroneous concepts and getting rid of them – through a lot of the instruments of intellectual and emotional interaction, among all members of any session.
And here, as we are wont to do in all axes, there will be a practical initiative (a graduation project), in the form of a practical exercise of the important concepts that occur in the present Portfolio.
